Storm star Jahrome Hughes has revealed he came desperately close to making a huge switch from Melbourne to New Zealand in 2021.

The Warriors were said to have tabled a huge offer to the 27-year-old last season, hoping to snare a marquee recruit after Roger Tuivasa-Sheck’s rugby union departure.

The gun fullback left the New Zealand side with a hefty war chest of over a million dollars, but their offer wasn’t enough to pry Hughes away, initially signing a deal which would see his stay at the Storm continue to the end of 2023.

This year, Hughes again extended his deal, signing a new contract which will see his don the famous purple jersey until the end of 2026.

The Kiwi international revealed just how close he was to turning his back on Craig Bellamy.

“It was a bit of a process,” Hughes said to the NZ Herald.

“That was the first big contract that got passed my way. It took a while to figure out what I really wanted to do and I was pretty close to going to the Warriors.

“It was a new challenge, that made me want to try it. But it sort of all came down to where I was happy and I was super happy here.

“I had just come off the 2020 premiership and just started playing regular first grade and that contract was way bigger than I had ever got offered.

“So it was silly not to consider my options.

“The money was a bit different but money wasn’t everything in my decision. Although I was really close to probably going, I was happy here, with the players we had, the coaching staff and what direction they wanted to go and I ended up staying.”

The Storm also extended gun hooker Harry Grant and Xavier Coates signature at the same time of Hughes, locking down the future of the club for years to come.
