Siosifa Talakai’s stunning emergence has presented the Cronulla Sharks with an unexpected salary cap headache.

The 25-year-old has emerged as the breakout star of the NRL season so far, absolutely terrorising opposition defences since being moved into the centres a month ago.

Talakai is contracted until the end of 2023, meaning he’ll be free to sign a deal with another club from November 1 this year. The Sharks will be desperate to keep the versatile wrecking ball long-term but a run of form that has many tipping an Origin call up for Talakai has changed things dramatically.

Daily Telegraph reporter Phil Rothfield reveraled on Wednesdays NRL 360 Talakai’s current contract, signed last year, is worth around $300,000 a season — a third of what the club paid its former centre Josh Dugan annually.

But with the Talakai now sure to be in the sights of many rivals his value has suddenly exploded.

“Cronulla have got a little problem here because like every club they do long-term (salary) cap planning, two or three years ahead, and they didn’t plan for Talakai to blow this premiership open and become probably double the value he’s on,” Rothfield said.

“They’ve got a bit of trimming to do, he’s available to other clubs in November.

“… He hasn’t just bashed up Manly and poor old Morgan Harper, he’s done that to a number of teams this year and I think he’ll play on the bench for Origin for sure because he can play front row, back row and centre.”
