Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has taken aim at the bunker after Warriors prop Matt Lodge was awarded a crucial penalty for a high shot in the closing minutes of their Round 8 encounter.

Lodge has since admitted he stayed down in a bid to gain the penalty, which levelled the scores and sent the game to golden point, allowing the Warriors to seal the win courtesy of a Shaun Johnson field goal.

Bunker official Steve Chiddy has been stood down following the incident, and Stuart labelled the technology as “damaging the fabric” of the game.

“I believe the bunker is damaging our game, I don’t believe we do need the bunker because they can’t get it right,” Stuart said.

“I really believe the bunker is getting it so wrong we need to have the bunker only involved in contentious tries.

“It’s just damaging the fabric and the way we want the game to be viewed, it’s annoying and it makes it more annoying when you lose games from it.”

Stuart explained he had spoken to NRL powerbrokers and the NRL’s head of football Graham Annesley since the weekend, but couldn’t understand why Lodge remained on the field, escaping the bunker’s independent doctor ruling on a head injury.

“(Lodge) has even come out and said that he’s faked it … we all knew he faked it, everyone in the ground knew he faked it,” Stuart said.

“I really don’t understand how we can penalise Corey Horsburgh on that shot on Lodge … and yet we have a bunker doctor who wants to keep contributing into a game.

“He laid on the ground for a number of seconds after a so-called head shot, and the bunker doctor didn’t even want to do any HIA protocols.”

Stuart also took aim at the NRL judiciary for only handing fines to players put on report, including Lodge who delivered an elbow to the face of Corey Harawire-Naera when coming into contact with the ball.

“For some unknown reason I can’t work out why two elbows last week didn’t get a charge,” Stuart said.
