Gorden Tallis paid an emotional tribute to Australian cricket legend and close mate Andrew ‘Roy’ Symonds following his tragic passing and lifted the lid on his bid to play for the Broncos.

Tallis spoke highly of Symonds’ care free nature, his ability to be himself and his brief stint in rugby league.

“He’s just a larrikin, he’s just one of those really good Aussie blokes and I spent a bit of time with Roy and my thoughts and love go out to his family,” an emotional Tallis told Triple M.

“The best thing about Roy is that he didn’t apologise for being Andrew Symonds.

“Sometimes you meet people and there’s the cricketer Andrew Symonds or there’s some different alter ego but Andrew Symonds was Andrew Symonds and he didn’t apologise for just being a big brash country guy.

“He’d wear footy shorts, an old Hard Yakka shirt, the old King Gee shirt.

“He’d just go out and fish and the happiest he was, was when he had a can of XXXX in one hand and a fishing rod in the other.”

Cricket wasn’t the only sport Symonds’ loved, from his childhood until the day he passed Roy was a massive fan of the Brisbane Broncos, so much so he nearly became one.

“He came over and he must’ve spoken to Wayne then all of a sudden Andrew Symonds comes to training and I thought it was just for fitness.

“I thought that’s a really good idea, cricketer comes, do a couple of weeks and it’s going to fast track you for cricket training and get you up to speed but he was seriously thinking that if he had it he wouldn’t mind coming and having a shot at the Broncos or getting into the Queensland Cup.

“I think he even had a game for Wynnum Manly Seagulls and when he’d go home to Townsville he’d go and play in the local rugby competition as well.”
