Rabbitohs coach Jason Demetriou said he will reach out to the NRL for an explanation after South Sydney lost Taane Milne to a failed head injury assessment on Sunday afternoon.

The Rabbitohs lost both Milne and Tevita Tatola to head knocks in the 32-12 defeat at Dubbo.

While accepting that Tatola was not in a good way and was right to be ruled out, Demetriou was less than convinced about the decision to rub Milne from the game.

“Taane has next to nothing wrong with him,” Demetriou said when asked to provide an update on the pair.

“We will be asking some questions about that decision, that’s for sure.”

Demetriou said he spoke to Milne in the changeroom and that the outside back told him that “at no point” he felt like he was confused.

While respectful of the process, Demetriou maintained he would be following up the decision during the week.

“They are big decisions we are making in games,” he said.

“When you’re losing a winger… that’s a question for later in the week.”

Demetriou said that Tatola should be OK to play next week, when South Sydney will look to bounce back against the Tigers.

Errors killed the Rabbitohs’ chances early in the game in an all-too-familiar issue for last year’s grand finalists.

“[We had a] bit of adversity at the start of the game and individually we were trying to solve it, and we put a lot of pressure on our defence,” Demetriou said.

“Canberra completed higher and did what they had to do, they were running harder and tackling harder.

“I just felt like we still gave them opportunities through poor offloads that put more pressure on our defence. When we got opportunities, we overplayed, chasing the scoreboard which has been something we’ve done too often instead of having more patience.

“I think we missed 40 odd tackles. When you’re doing that, that comes out in how you run the footy as well.

“It’s our season at the moment, when we’re showing some good signs and then we’re showing some not good signs.”
