Former Warriors prop Matt Lodge is reportedly desperate to return to the NRL, but one big sticking point is stopping interested clubs from signing him.

The 27-year-old enforcer is yet to secure a new deal and the NRL have reportedly set a nominal salary cap value of around $20,000 per game for Lodge to take the field.

According to The Daily Telegraph, several clubs have come forward with interest in acquiring his services but do not have the cap space at their disposal for the remainder of the season.

NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo revealed he personally invited Lodge to Rugby League Central to speak with officials and offer support.

“We will register a contract,” Abdo said.

“What has happened in the past has happened. We will register a contract – it just needs to be with the rules.

“We wouldn’t break the rules for any player. We didn’t do it for Sonny Bill (Williams).”

Lodge has expressed his desire to return to the field, but Abdo stressed that the rules would not be bent for anyone.

“He called me because he was saying he really needed to play,” Abdo said.

“I said I was happy for him to come in, put his case forward and they can explain to you the rules. That has happened.

“It was just explaining how it works. He is very keen to play. We have offered him support. He can play (NSW) cup until he picks up an NRL contract.

“The salary cap auditor has to have a contract proposal put to him by a club. That hasn’t happened yet – there have been some inquiries.

“Everyone knows how the salary cap system works. It is pretty straight forward.”

Lodge made an abrupt departure from the Warriors in May, following a heated altercation with the New Zealand club’s owner.

He was released from the final year of his contract and paid out to the tune of $700,000.
