There were whispers three years ago that Eddie Jones may return to Australia to take up a new coaching role with the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

It never eventuated, but that does not mean the ambitions to coach in the NRL are gone.

Rather, according to The Sydney Morning Herald, Jones “has told his inner circle his true ambition” still lies in rugby league amid links to the Wallabies.

Reports last week suggested that Rugby Australia has made preliminary contact with Jones to see whether he would consider a role with Australian rugby after the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

RA is said to be looking at having Jones either on board in a director of rugby role or even in a shock return as coach.

Those reports seemed to have renewed interest in whether Jones would still consider a role in rugby league instead and The Herald reports his “specific goal” is to coach the Rabbitohs.

Jones’ contract with England wraps up in November 2023, with plenty of interest already in his services.

The chances of RA landing Jones appear to be slim though, with The Herald claiming he is “bemused — bordering on angry” by links of a Wallabies return, having been sacked by them in 2005.

Now, complicating matters is the fact the Rabbitohs had been planning for Jason Demetriou to take over Wayne Bennett for a long time and are finally starting to see early signs of success.

After an underwhelming start to the season, the return of Latrell Mitchell has fired South Sydney back into top-four contention after looking like it may miss the finals entirely.

“It was always going to be big shoes to fill when Wayne left but Jason, to where the Rabbitohs first started to where they are now, has grown so much,” Corey Parker said on Fox League on Saturday night after South Sydney’s 24-12 win over Melbourne.

“I go back to the game where the Rabbitohs played the Dragons. They were awful, the night Ilias got hooked from the field. They were diabolical and that was not so long ago. But for them to then bind together, focus and narrow their thoughts on where they want to go and believe in what Demetriou is talking about and come up with four-straight wins.”

Jones could, of course, take up a role with South Sydney as a coaching director as opposed to replacing Demetriou, who is really starting to warm into his new position at the club.

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart, who previously joined the English rugby squad to see how they operate, told The Herald in 2019 that Jones could definitely make it as a NRL coach.

“Eddie loves his league,” Stuart said at the time.

“The way the England team played … let’s just say that I have never seen a rugby side play so similarly to a league side.

“I don’t know if he wants to coach in the NRL. Could he do it? I have no doubt he could if that was on his radar. To transfer a coach from code to code .. well they’ve never been closer, so yes, it’s doable.”
