The Dragons have begun negotiations to extend star playmaker Ben Hunt’s contract, hoping to keep him in the Red V for years to come.

According to The Daily Telegraph, St George Illawarra powerbrokers met with the 32-year-old’s management on Thursday.

Hunt is reportedly set to sign a two-year extension, seeing his tenure at the club continue until the end of 2025.

“We have started the process to extend Ben, and we’re very hopeful we can keep him at the club long-term,” St George Illawarra chief executive Ryan Webb said.

“He is an important person on the field and has a tremendous impact off it.”

Reports suggest a deal could be finalised as soon as next month, which would see Hunt play into his mid thirties.

Hunt signed a five-year deal worth upwards of $5 million after leaving the Broncos, becoming the club’s captain and winning the player of the year award in 2021.

When Dally M voting closed to public viewing, Hunt was two points head of Panthers star Isaah Yeo, and is a strong chance of taking the game’s top award after an impressive season.

If Hunt signs a new deal, he could become only the fifth player ever to play more than 350 NRL games, with the club likely to keep their marquee player in the halves.

Meanwhile, young gun Talatau Amone is also reportedly set to sign a new deal, denying the Dolphins’ advances.

Amone’s current deal runs out at the end of the 2023 season.

The Dragons have also reportedly held talks with Roosters young gun Sam Verrills and the Tigers pairing of Jake Simpkin and Jacob Liddle.
