Elon Musk says will change name of Grokipedia to Encyclopedia Galactica when ...

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that Grokipedia, his AI-powered alternative to Wikipedia will eventually be renamed ‘Encyclopedia Galactica’ after the platform reaches a higher standard of quality. Musk took to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to make this announcement. The announcement made by Musk reflects his long-standing fascination with science fiction and his ambition to build a futuristic and AI-driven repository of human knowledge.

From Grokipedia to Encyclopedia Galactica

“When Grokipedia is good enough (long way to go), we will change the name to Encyclopedia Galactica. It will be an open source distillation of all knowledge, including audio, images and video,” Musk wrote in a post on X.The Encyclopedia Galactica is a nod to classic science fiction, notably Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series, where it represents a vast compendium of all human knowledge. Musk’s rebranding plan signals his vision for Grokipedia to evolve into a more expansive, multimedia-rich, and universally accessible knowledge platform.

What is Grokipedia

Launched by Musk’s AI company xAI, Grokipedia is an AI-generated encyclopaedia which aims to deliver “truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.” Unlike Wikipedia, which relies on human editors, Grokipedia uses Grok, xAI’s large language model, to generate and fact-check articles. The platform is centralized, meaning users cannot directly edit entries. While still in its early stages, Grokipedia already features thousands of articles and is positioned as a rival to Wikipedia, with a focus on speed, scale, and AI-driven accuracy.

Grokipedia’s rocky start

Despite Musk’s claim that Grokipedia will be a “massive improvement” over Wikipedia, early users have flagged factual errors and ideological slants. One entry falsely claimed that former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy took on a major role in DOGE after Musk’s departure, despite Ramaswamy having left months earlier.Grok, the AI chatbot behind Grokipedia, has also faced controversy. In July, it shared antisemitic content, including posts praising Adolf Hitler. xAI later apologized, attributing the incident to a flawed code update.
