In a move that significantly strengthens the “historical relations and fraternal bonds” between Muscat and Ankara, the governments of Oman and Turkiye have officially activated a mutual visa exemption for their citizens. This landmark agreement, which entered into force on November 1, 2025, follows high-level diplomatic talks at Al Alam Palace between His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Oman and Turkiye visa-free travel

Oman and Turkiye have officially implemented a mutual visa exemption agreement that makes visiting each country much easier for ordinary passport holders. Under this new arrangement, Omani citizens can travel to Turkiye without needing a visa in advance, and Turkish citizens can visit Oman visa-free as well. This change aims to expand tourism, encourage cultural exchange, and strengthen ties between both nations. The rules are straightforward:

  • Omanis visiting Turkiye: no visa is required beforehand. They can stay visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism.
  • Turks visiting Oman: similarly, they can enter Oman without a visa for up to 30 days per visit, but their total stay should not exceed 90 days in any 180-day period.

This means citizens of both countries no longer need to apply for tourist visas before travel, a big convenience for holidaymakers, family visitors, and short-term trips.

How does visa-free travel work?

To benefit from the visa exemption, travelers should keep a few simple details in mind:

  • Passport Validity: Visitors must ensure their passports are valid for at least six months from the date of entry.
  • Tourism Only: The waiver covers touristic visits and short stays, business visas or long-term stays may still require separate permission depending on the purpose. Stay Limits: The agreement sets clear limits on how long visitors can remain in each country without a visa to prevent overstays and ensure fairness.

This simpler travel process is expected to boost travel between the countries, making it easier for friends, families, and travelers interested in exploring new places without visa hurdles. The visa waiver is just one piece of a much larger puzzle. During the state visit, the two nations signed 16 different agreements covering sectors like military cooperation, mining, energy, and media. President Erdogan described the agreement as a “significant milestone,” emphasizing that the freedom of movement will directly contribute to enhancing joint ventures in the private and public sectors. To ensure these agreements are more than just ink on paper, the two countries have established the Oman–Turkiye Coordination Council. This body will act as a permanent institutional framework to monitor the implementation of these deals, ensuring that the newfound ease of travel translates into tangible economic growth and stronger regional security.

Oman’s expansion of visa services

Oman’s move with Turkiye is part of a wider effort to liberalize travel policies with partners around the world. In recent years, Oman has signed similar visa-free or visa-exemption agreements with other countries for diplomatic passport holders and ordinary citizens alike. For example:

  • Visa-free arrangements have been introduced with Russia, allowing ordinary passport holders to travel without a visa for short stays.
  • Oman has also moved to allow Armenian citizens to enter without a visa, a policy aimed at encouraging tourism and cooperation.

These agreements highlight Oman’s broader strategy to ease travel barriers, support tourism growth, and position itself as a welcoming destination for international visitors. The Oman–Turkiye reciprocal visa exemption simplifies travel and invites people from both countries to explore each other’s culture, landscapes, and opportunities with fewer hurdles. It’s a practical move that benefits travelers and strengthens diplomatic ties, all while making short trips easier and planning travel more flexible than ever before.Oman and Turkiye now offer visa-free travel for citizens; Here’s what you need to know
