PMAY‑Urban scheme nears 1 crore completed homes; Andhra, Gujarat lead the drive
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban (PMAY‑U) has sanctioned 1.22 crore houses in cities nationwide. Of these, 114.59 lakh constructions have begun, 96.65 lakh homes are complete, and 94.24 lakh are already occupied—marking significant progress toward the government’s “Housing for All” goal.The urban housing mission has mobilised a total investment of Rs 8.42 lakh crore as per the latest government data.The Centre has committed Rs 2,04,734 crore in assistance, out of which Rs 1,76,433 crore has been released. Utilisation certificates for Rs 1,66,392 crore have been received, indicating that most released funds have been effectively deployed on the ground.Among the 122.22 lakh houses sanctioned, 79.21 lakh fall under the Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC) category, 17.31 lakh under Affordable Housing in Partnership or In‑Situ Slum Redevelopment (AHP/ISSR), and 25.68 lakh through the Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS/ISS).In terms of completion, the BLC vertical leads with 54.96 lakh houses finished, followed by 25.68 lakh under CLSS/ISS and 12.58 lakh in the AHP/ISSR category. Around 10 lakh houses have been built using new construction technologies.Out of the total central assistance pool of about Rs 2.05 lakh crore, BLC accounts for Rs 1,19,084 crore, CLSS/ISS Rs 59,181 crore, and AHP/ISSR Rs 26,469 crore. Releases so far amount to Rs 97,434 crore, RS 59,181 crore and Rs 19,818 crore respectively, showing that large portions have already been disbursed.
State‑wise trends
According to the latest government data, the five states that benefited the most from the scheme are Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Goa, and Bihar. The state-wise breakdown is as follows:
- Andhra Pradesh remains the front‑runner with 19.48 lakh sanctioned houses, 18.32 lakh grounded and 11.19 lakh completed, supported by an investment of Rs 86,563 crore.
- Gujarat follows closely, having completed 9.63 lakh of its 10.27 lakh sanctioned units.
- States such as Chhattisgarh and Goa show high completion‑to‑sanction ratios—Goa achieving 100% completion.
- Bihar’s progress is more moderate, with 1.98 lakh of 4.45 lakh houses completed.
What is PMAY-U ?
Launched on June 25, 2015, PMAY‑U was initially slated to end in March 2022, but has been extended to complete houses sanctioned within the original period. The Ministry of housing and urban affairs continues to steer the mission, targeting completion of all urban housing units under existing funding norms.
