NEW DELHI: Canada has appointed diplomat Jeff David as the consul general in Mumbai, according to an announcement by Canadian foreign minister Anita Anand. This is the first diplomatic appointment by Canada here since the expulsion of over 40 Canadian diplomats by India after the row over Canadian allegations – under former PM Justin Trudeau – that the Indian government orchestrated the killing of Khalistan separatist on Canadian soil. The two countries are also likely to soon reappoint high commissioners, in line with the understanding reached earlier this year. According to official sources, they have already exchanged the names of the high commissioners. The development follows PM Modi’s meeting with his counterpart Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, in June. The leaders had underlined the need to pursue a constructive and balanced partnership grounded in “mutual respect for concerns and sensitivities, strong people-to-people ties, and growing economic complementarities”.
