SIR 2.0: Special voter roll revision to begin in 12 states, including UP, Bengal - see full list

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India on Monday announced that phase 2 of SIR (Special Intensive Revision) of electoral rolls will be carried out in 12 States/Union territories.The 12 states and UTs where the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) will begin from tomorrow are as follows:

  1. Andaman and Nicobar Islands
  2. Goa
  3. Puducherry
  4. Chhattisgarh
  5. Gujarat
  6. Kerala
  7. Madhya Pradesh
  8. Uttar Pradesh
  9. Rajasthan,
  10. West Bengal
  11. Tamil Nadu
  12. Telangana

Among these, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and West Bengal will go to the polls in 2026. Addressing a press conference in Delhi, the chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar also announced that draft rolls will be published on December 9, while final electoral rolls on February 7, 2026.“Phase two of SIR will cover 51 crore voters. While the enumeration process will begin on November 4, the draft rolls will be published on December 9 and final electoral rolls on February 7,” Kumar added.The main objective of the SIR exercise is to identify and remove foreign illegal migrants by verifying individuals’ place of birth. The move gains importance amid ongoing crackdowns in several states on undocumented migrants, particularly those from Bangladesh and Myanmar.CEC Gyanesh Kumar also clarified that in Assam, where polls are also due in 2026, the revision of electoral rolls will be announced separately.
